CATS
Acrylic
Approx. 14 " x 10"
2007

NOTES: "Cats" was created for "Charity by Numbers", an art auction to benefit The Alliance For Children’s Rights, hosted by the Corey Helford Gallery [link]
Participating artists were provided a classic hand-painted, vintage paint-by-numbers painting which they then customized into something that could be called their own.
I must say, the line up of participating artists was amazing. I was flattered to even be invited at all. Here's a list of some of the noteables: Mark Ryden & Marion Peck, Tim Biskup, Gary Baseman, Todd & Kathy Schorr, Camille Rose Garcia, Michael Hussar, Shag, Clayton Brothers, Shepard Fairey, Andrew Brandou, Miss Van, Paul Frank, and many many more.
For this project, I intentionally mimicked the rendering style of the paint-by-numbers painting with the intention that my contribution appear seamless.

It's pretty uncanny just how well you captured that paint-by-numbers look here. I'm really impressed (for what that's worth).

Very cool idea for a charity/art event. You really did get the style down perfectly--the contrast between the nostalgic, cozy style and the violent subject matter is both frightening and humorous.
